Successful data Management – Testing

In the previous two articles in this series we understood the need for strong governance and tool based approach to implementing SAP successfully. We looked at the process-driven SAP implementation methodology using Software AG’s ARIS tool along with SAP’s Solution Manager to support the Project Preparation, Business Blueprinting and Realization phases of the project.

In this concluding edition we will look at the Testing (Integration-E2E and User Acceptance- UAT) and Go-Live of the project. We will continue with the ASAP methodology:


Software AG’s ARIS integrates with HP’s Quality Centre (HP QC) and SAP’s Solution Manager (SolMan) to Support Testing (Integration and UAT).


ARIS is used to generate Test Scenarios automatically from the processes documented during the Blueprinting stage. Risk based testing can be carried to ensure the test scripts cover processes with highest risk. Existing processes are used for easy composition of test paths, avoidingmanual creation of test scripts, saving time and cost:


ARIS test designer is also used to create End to End test paths for integration testing:


The test scripts created from ARIS are synchronized with HP QC for managing the test cases.  Once the testing is complete in HP QC, the test results from HP QC are synchronized with SAP SolMan. SolMan’s service desk is used to generate and assign tickets for the failed test cases and it then manages them through to resolution.



As we have used the processes defined in ARIS during the Blueprinting stage for implementation of the project and further for testing the implementation, we can be sure that the design has been implemented correctly which is confirmed by testing:



User Acceptance Testing

User’s can test the SAP system to ensure their requirements have been met and then provide acceptance of the system using Software AG’s ARIS.

ARIS provides powerful & fast dynamic publishing to the company intranet or static ‘plug & play’ publishing. It has role based access and tailored views. The users can log onto the published processes, follow them to ensure business logic is correct and then run the SAP transactions such as Create Purchase Order, Settle Invoice, Create Sales Order etc, they can also open SAP documentation related to the process and configuration. And vice-versa, that is: Users logged onto SAP can open Process Documentation from ARIS for reference.



The same concept (as UAT) can be used in case of training users during the Final Preparation stage of the project. The users can follow the process and look at its documentation as well as run SAP transactions to get trained.

In Final Preparationphase of the project, the intended users of the SAP system need to be trained on how tohandle SAP transactions in the context of the businessprocesses. To simplify user training, the ARIS models are utilized, providing a convenient overview ofthe process and a better understanding of individual roles in the process.

The ability to call transactions from within ARIS provides valuable support here. The ARIS models can be used to help define a training strategy based on the modeled roles and responsibilities.

Similarly, ARIS allows centralized access to the project documents transferred during synchronization. In thisway, the ARIS models that are eventually published can contain the centralized user documentation and give users better support, together with theprocess models.

Documents from various sources are madeavailable directly by the published ARIS models.

ARIS also offers smart reports and dashboards to indicate progress of project. The management team can use these dashboards to monitor and analyze the project progress across its phases.

After go-live of the SAP system, ARIS can continue to be used across the business for managing it’s business processes, monitor their performance (Process Performance Management). In case of changes to the processes and SAP System, ARIS and SAP SolMan provide valuable means for effective decision making (impact assessment/ Business Process Change Analysis) and management ofthese changes.

The above discussed approach to SAP Implementation not only provides strong control in terms of monitoring, effective governance structure and project management, butalso saves time, cost and delivers high standards of quality ensuring the project is a success. It paves the path for future- efficient processes and continuous improvement.
