Concepts Of Architecture – Green Building

In 19th century skyscrapers architect, Louis Sullivan, Promoted “Form Follows Function” which is an overriding percept to architectural design.

One concept that has gained momentum is that of “function” in place of Vitruvius “utility”.

“Function” came to be seen as encompassing all criteria of the use, perception and enjoyment of a building, not only practical but also aesthetic, psychological and cultural.

A famous Architect Nunzia Rondanini states, “Through its aesthetic dimension architecture goes beyond the functional aspects that it has in common with other human sciences. Through its own particular way of expressing values, architecture can stimulate and influence social life without presuming that, in and of itself, it will promote social development.”

Green building

Architects try to exploit environmental resources such as sunlight and air flow to decide layouts, orientation, direction of windows, heights, distance between structures.

There is a conscious move towards environment friendly and resource efficient architecture.

A green building ,is also known as a sustainable building, is a structure that is designed, built, renovated, operated, or reused in an ecological and resource-efficient manner. Green buildings optimize the effects of environmental conditions on the occupants and they are designed to meet objectives such as protecting occupant health, improving employee productivity and living conditions as well as using resources such as energy and water more efficiently.

A set of rating systems is design for the construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings which was Developed by the U.S Green Building Council is known as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

The key initiatives are based around minimizing pollution, effective waste utilization and disposal, optimum use of natural and other resources and protecting the occupants from environmental and other hazards. Simple measures such as window selection using light colored roofs, paving walkways and duct sealing can contribute towards an energy efficient building

New technologies are constantly being developed to complement current practices in creating greener structures

Well designed green buildings will save money, increase comfort and create healthier environments for people to live and work, using improved indoor air quality, natural daylight, and thermal comfort. Energy use by depleting natural resources as well as CO2 emissions is one of our most important environmental impacts. Volatile energy markets, rising energy costs and increasing environmental awareness about issues such as global warming make energy efficiency and conservation a high priority. Build Green’s focus is on reducing building energy usage and carbon footprint and increasing occupant comfort.

Commonly used methods to optimize use of resources are

  • Use of solar or wind energy for light and heat
  • Water harvesting systems
  • Use of design and material for optimum ventilation, natural lighting and reducing noise
  • Protecting existing ecology, developing internal green spaces
  • Recycling facility
  • Protecting local water table, reduce impervious areas by proper planning of parking and road spaces
  • Thermal insulation techniques and material to reduce energy consumption

A similar method is used in “Natural building” but on a smaller scale and tends to focus on the use of natural materials that are available locally.

Other related topics include sustainable design green architecture. Sustainability may be defined as meeting the needs of present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Although some green building programs don’t address the issue of the retrofitting existing homes, others do, especially through public schemes for energy efficient redecoration. Green construction principles can easily be applied to retrofit work as well as new construction
